How Chiropractic Works
Chiropractic is a natural form of healing with roots dating back to the original Olympic games. A chiropractor focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and correction of spinal vertebral subluxations.
Dr. Swanson’s comprehensive treatments, which included cranial adjustments, really made me feel better than I had since my diagnosis of Fibromyalgia. An added benefit was that it helped all my other therapies stay with me for a longer period of time, or enhanced them in some way.

Impulses in the nervous system are relayed from the brain in the cranium to the whole body via the spine. This constant communication from the body to the brain and the brain to the body is a dynamic system of balance. The ability to remove problems within this system is what sets chiropractic apart from other healing modalities.
At each bone in the spine, nerves extend out into the body to enable movement, feeling and functioning of organs like the liver and spleen. Chiropractic adjustments unlock parts of the spine that are unable to move freely, thus pinching and causing pain or dysfunction to the nerves. The adjustment works with the mechanical functioning of joints in the spine and extremities, enabling free-flowing function.
The originators of chiropractic believed that “innate” energy — the energy that makes the body a living, breathing person — flows through the nervous system. For that reason the natural process of aiding the body to rebalance itself after the causative “problem” has been removed argues for chiropractic first, drugs second, and surgery last.
In addition to primary adjustments, chiropractic includes electrical stimulation and ultrasound modalities that promote relaxation and healing. Massage of muscles in spasm can be included to help sustain the adjustments, and specialized exercises are given at appropriate times.
Nutritional supplementation is often included in the process, thus creating a wellness program that encourages the patient to return to whole body health.
Chiropractic Approach & Style
Harmony and balance are crucial elements of homeostasis, that neutral zone the body naturally seeks for wellness. Each person’s homeostasis is unique, as is my tailored care of each person.
SacroOccipital Technique (SOT) is the basis of my care. I use blocks to easily reposition the pelvis and spine, unlocking the system and allowing the free flow of cerebrospinal fluid to bathe the spine and brain. The activator is a small tool that applies a direct, pinpointed force to the area in need of adjusting, in a process many people laughingly refer to as “being stapled.”
New within the last year is the option of treatment with a neuromechanical tool called the "Impulse Adjusting Instrument™" It provides a pulsing, or tapping, that shifts the bone in a very gentle manner, perfect for children and sensitive adults. I also have a specially designed worktable that allows sections to drop away and make space for regular adjustments. This makes it more comfortable for the patient.
One of my primary specialties is cranial adjustment. Most people are surprised to hear that the bones of the head can be adjusted, because we have observed old, non-living bones, which are unmoving. The respiratory/cranial pumping system nourishes the brain by moving the cerebral spinal fluid around and through it. It is in synchronization with this motion that the cranial adjustments are performed.
Each section in the cranial palette is like the keystone of a bridge. I gently move these bones of the palette and cranium as they expand and contract. Some people report clearer eyesight immediately after a cranial adjustment. Others find they are able to stay more focused on a task, or read for longer periods of time with greater comprehension. Many people come for cranial adjustments to reduce the occurrence of headaches.
Muscle relaxation is encouraged through electrical stimulation, and ultrasound is used to decrease inflammation and aid in the healing process. Qi Gong applications are painless and aid in the process of re-balancing the body, as well as helping the body to maintain the adjustment.Noetic Field Balancing/Energy Therapy
I began to study energy healing in 1980, prior to my chiropractic training. Energy therapy is designed to remove blockages from the auric field, which includes the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical bodies.
Imagine that within and around your physical body, almost like a transparent bodysuit, lie the layers of the emotional, mental and spiritual energy fields. A blockage in any one of these energy fields affects all the others. With the assistance of prayer and focus, self-forgiveness and re-framing, we can begin to remove these blocks, allowing the person to release stress and anxiety over past or present issues. The process generally takes about an hour and a half and can be, quite literally, life-changing.
