FAQ
What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a healing technique wherein the practitioner’s hands manually reposition the bones of the spine and joints of the arms and legs. When a bone is out of alignment, the nerves that exit from the spine may be pinched, causing pain and dysfunction. “Adjustments” are designed to restore bones to the correct place so that the joint can function correctly. This also allows the life force energy to flow freely and harmoniously throughout the entire body.
Nutrition vs. Drugs
As an alternative practitioner I believe that the body has an innate ability to heal itself. When a person needs assistance with healing, the most natural and least invasive approach is preferred. Chiropractic adjustments are a non-invasive, natural approach to restoring homeostasis. Once that is established, proper nutrition and appropriate herbs support the return to balance and promote well-being. This is the body’s own balancing system. If the body is still not able to return to health, it may be necessary to consult a medical doctor for further evaluation.
Do I have to exercise?
Studies have shown that people who exercise regularly are stronger and healthier as they age. Take a good look at Dr. Jack LaLanne, a chiropractor still going strong at 90, along with his wife, Elaine. They are great examples of people who have kept their muscle strength as they age.
Physical exercise enhances and maintains physical fitness and overall health. Whether it is walking, stretching, aerobics or yoga, moving your body strengthens muscles and keeps your cardiovascular system healthier.
Good muscle strength also helps prevent age-related falls, keeps your metabolism high and generally helps people have a better outlook on life.
How do I know if my child needs chiropractic treatment?
During the normal birth process, the head naturally twists as the child emerges from the birth canal. The upper neck bones can usually return to a normal placement, but if not, the parent might notice that the child’s head is “always tilted,” or maybe the child cannot turn her head to the right or left easily. Then a simple adjustment to the upper neck bones can allow all the bones to move easily, and all the nerves that go to the brain and body to function properly.
First Visit
You’ll enter into a comfortable, art-filled waiting area to complete your paperwork. (If you prefer, paperwork can be emailed or mailed for completion prior to your visit.) Dr. Swanson takes a thorough history and then conducts orthopedic and neurological examinations. Postural evaluation and range of motion studies are done to uncover the imbalances that are causing problems. My goal is to restore balance to your body, so any information you can give me as to what might have caused the imbalance will be very helpful.
If it is determined that you need X-rays or an MRI, you will be referred to a state of the art facility where specialized radiologists construct reports that will be sent to Swanson Wellness.
Every step of the treatment is tailored to your needs and conditions. Gentle activator adjustments or an Impulse Adjusting Instrument ™ are used as appropriate, and if a more direct approach is required, the Thompson Drop Table allows the adjustment to be much more gracious for the patient.
Home instructions for ice/heat or herbal remedies are given. Any activities that are best avoided are discussed.
Subsequent appointments are recommended according to what will best help you in reaching the greater state of health you desire.
